I think one of the not-so-well-kept secrets about music is that actually being out of your face on stage is not conducive to playing well, or indeed at all, mostly.

I'm really not sure about the not being able to face an audience sober thing - it's hard enough to get anywhere in music even if you are able to face any audience in any state of mind and win them over with a few songs, so people with the basic 'can't actually perform' handicap are as likely to succeed as the 'can't actually play' types.

More likely its about coming off stage all full of adrenalin and being in close proximity to a bar.
