Bleah.

Tonight I played the first rock gig I have played stone cold sober in a long time, with the decreasingly Australian band My Scarlet and the Darlings or whatever we're called this week.

It was weird. I thought I was playing terribly, but in fact received more positive feedback than usual afterwards, including from a very cute Mediterranean looking girl who seemed to need to wrap both hands and arms around me in order to tell me that she had enjoyed the show, which was nice of her, until I spotted the long-suffering boyfriend she was there with whereupon she became inexplicably invisible, then disappeared.

So, that's positive feedback, but from a bunch of pissed people, obviously. Oh, I dunno.

Seems Ron Simmonds was right about drinking (scroll down, or hell, read the whole thing, it's amazing). Up to a point.

Whatever. I am not sober now. But I was earlier.

Anyway.

The other loud rock band I am playing with at the moment have some extremely new mp3s, if loud rock things are not tedious to you.

I should probably go and eat something. I am teh very lucky boy, I know. Wish I felt that way. Bleah.

Bleah.

Feh.

Working sober by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #3 Sun Apr 02, 2006 at 03:23:53 AM EST
can be quite a good thing really.

Sure, you lack the cocoon that convinces you you are teh hottest stuff in the universe, but maybe at the same time you get a sense of some stuff that actually really works. After all, entertaining drunks is a large part of what live musicians are often paid to do... shame about the background boyfriend...

Nice story, thanks for the link.

Worth remembering by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Apr 03, 2006 at 09:21:20 AM EST
When you're a rich and famous rock star, being able to play sober will be a real asset. Apparently a lot of rock stars' drug and alcohol problems arise from not being able to face an audience when sober.

I think one of the not-so-well-kept secrets about music is that actually being out of your face on stage is not conducive to playing well, or indeed at all, mostly.

I'm really not sure about the not being able to face an audience sober thing - it's hard enough to get anywhere in music even if you are able to face any audience in any state of mind and win them over with a few songs, so people with the basic 'can't actually perform' handicap are as likely to succeed as the 'can't actually play' types.

More likely its about coming off stage all full of adrenalin and being in close proximity to a bar.
